What do I need to start piano lessons?
The most important thing needed to start lessons is a decent acoustic piano or a digital piano/keyboard. An upright or grand piano is best for students. Of course this may not always be an option, if you are selecting a digital piano/keyboard there are a couple of important factors to note. It is important for the keyboard to have 88 keys and a sustain pedal. The keys also need to be both weighted and touch-sensitive. Also necessary is a piano bench. I am happy to discuss your options and help you select a suitable instrument.
What do I need for Online Lessons?
The most important things you need for online lessons are: a computer/tablet with a decent internet connection, a piano, and of course yourself. While other equipment like webcams and microphones can always be helpful in getting the most out of lessons, they are not always completely necessary for you. Do you do masterclasses and recitals?
All of my students have the opportunity to perform in studio recitals, which have been held in formal venues like recital spaces, more informal settings such as seniors residences, as well as online in recent years. I create masterclasses that function as group classes for the whole studio that have a special focus on certain subjects, whether it be preperformance classes focussing on etiquette, dealing with nerves, or how to interact with the audience so they feel involved with the performance. at present, all recitals and masterclasses are held online.
Is my child ready for piano lessons?
Every child is different and has different factors to take in. If your child is interested in the piano and music, it is best to set up a time where we can meet so I can assess their readiness. Even if they are not quite ready for private lessons, that does not mean that they are not ready to begin their musical journey as there are many other options good options for young children to learn musical concepts.
What is included in our first lesson/assessment?
Our first meeting is free of charge. It is an opportunity for us to meet and discuss what you are aiming to get out of piano lessons, what goals you have for yourself or your child, and for me to do some assessments so that I can plan future lessons and share studio policies. If you feel that I am a good fit then we will arrange a weekly lesson time.
What styles of music do you teach?
While I primarily have a classical piano background, I love to teach all styles. If there is a particular style you are hoping to learn, please let me know. Beginners will use a piano method book based on my assessment which can be purchased through me. Students who wish to learn through the RCM will either purchase their books through me or at the music store. Depending on the age and goals of the student there may be no set method/graded book, rather we will be learning through progressive music of their chosen style. All students will have the opportunity to have supplemental pieces, games, and listening assignments.
